Farmers in New South Wales (NSW) experiencing drought have finally experienced a respite in the form of drought-breaking rainfall, in a much-anticipated turn of events.
This week’s storms that pounded the state provided an excess of desperately needed moisture; in certain places, over 100 mm of rain fell.
More than 70% of NSW has been experiencing extreme drought conditions, according to the Department of Primary Industries, so this rainfall is a much-needed lifeline for farmers.
James Goldsmith is one of the people who is enjoying this pleasant weather shift. He is a mixed farmer who lives 50 kilometres north of Coonamble. He was relieved and amazed that his land had gotten an incredible 116mm of rain in one night.
For Mr. Goldsmith, this drought had been very difficult—he likened it to some of the worst he had ever encountered.
Grain growers in the northwest region of New South Wales, west of Moree, are also celebrating the news of triple-digit rainfall totals, which include more than 130 millimetres in regions like Boomi
The area last saw a considerable amount of rain in October of the previous year, during which the district flooded.
According to the Department of Primary Industries, extreme drought conditions continue in the central-western sections of the state when the rain failed to fall
